Test conditions and setup
In October 2025, we had the opportunity to extensively test two of F-ONE's most exciting new products: the PLUME and the FRIGATE. We were particularly pleased to be able to ride some of the very first FRIGATEs available. We tested both concepts in Dakhla, at the new New Spirit Dakhla water sports center powered by KBC World .

The conditions on site were ideal. Consistent wind, plenty of space on the water, and long downwind spots offered perfect conditions for a direct comparison of both wings. Since it was our first session with the K-Wing and Pocket Wing, we deliberately chose a large 6'4" crossover board. This ensured early take-off, plenty of stability, and a relaxed start.
The PLUME – Our impression of the K-Wing
The PLUME is F-ONE's K-wing, combining features of a kite, wing, and pocket wing. From the very first flight, it was clear how intuitive this concept is. The PLUME is extremely light in the hands and builds power very smoothly.
Unlike a pocket wing, the PLUME can't simply be stowed away during freefly because its leading edge is inflated. Therefore, in freefly, the PLUME is held in your hands at all times, similar to a classic wing. Compared to a normal wing, however, the PLUME feels significantly lighter because it lacks a center strut. This reduced weight makes the PLUME stable and comfortable to hold, resulting in considerably less fatigue during extended freefly sessions.

A crucial aspect is power delivery. The PLUME generates noticeably more base power than the FRIGATE. The power is instantly available and inspires confidence, especially when the wind fluctuates or drops briefly. On our 6'4" crossover board, the PLUME felt very forgiving, allowing for smooth transitions between upwind riding, powering up, and freeflying.
Thanks to its wide wind range, the PLUME performs well in a variety of conditions. It remains stable and controllable even in stronger winds and feels light and manageable even at wind speeds exceeding 30 knots. This is precisely why we see the PLUME as a particularly good choice for areas with variable wind conditions, such as those found on many lakes in Germany.
The FRIGATE – Pocket Wing for Downwind Focus
The FRIGATE is F-ONE's first pocket wing and is clearly aimed at downwind-oriented riders. Even in our first session, it became clear that the FRIGATE is a very efficient and performance-oriented tool.
It gains altitude extremely quickly and builds up apparent wind very effectively as speed increases. Its strength lies less in raw power and more in its efficiency once you're moving. A major difference from the PLUME is the ability to completely pack away the FRIGATE. Thanks to its compact design and depower handle, the pocket wing can be neatly packed, allowing for completely hands-free downwind riding. This feeling of freedom is especially noticeable on longer downwind legs.

In terms of handling, the FRIGATE is slightly more technical than the PLUME. It remains comfortable, but requires a certain level of experience. We recommend only flying a pocket wing like the FRIGATE once you can already freefly several hundred meters without constantly needing to power up. Then it fully demonstrates its strengths and enables long, controlled downwind runs with maximum efficiency.
Differences are also apparent in the wind range. The FRIGATE impresses with its excellent low-end performance, allowing for the use of smaller sizes in the same wind conditions. It performs particularly well in consistent winds and on longer stretches where there's time to stow the wing and consciously enjoy the downwind leg.
Comparison at a glance
The PLUME scores points with its high basic power, wide wind range and very intuitive handling. It offers a high degree of safety in changing conditions and is particularly suitable for areas with variable winds.
The FRIGATE impresses with its efficiency, fast upwind performance, and maximum freedom in the downwind. It is aimed at experienced riders who cover long distances and want to completely stow their wing.
Conclusion
Our test in Dakhla clearly demonstrated that the PLUME and the FRIGATE don't replace each other, but rather complement each other perfectly. The PLUME is the more versatile and accessible tool and is ideally suited for changing conditions, for getting started in freeflying, and for areas with unpredictable winds, such as many lakes in Germany.
The FRIGATE is the logical next step for downwind-oriented riders who already have freefly experience and are looking for maximum efficiency, autonomy, and freedom. Anyone wanting to ride long downwinders in consistent winds will find the FRIGATE to be an extremely powerful tool.
Thanks to its similar control system, the PLUME is, in our view, also the ideal intermediate step before later upgrading to the FRIGATE. With these two concepts, F-ONE is opening up new avenues in downwind foiling – and the decision ultimately depends on where and how you're sailing.
